Community Involvement

A Passion for Service, and a Heart for Giving

As a part of Chicago for 145 years, at Northwestern Mutual – Chicago we are building on a legacy of service and a tradition of giving.  Our mission is simple: to improve lives and make a lasting impact on our local communities. We do it in several ways.

It starts with our support of Northwestern Mutual’s national philanthropic program to fight childhood cancer.  The goals of our program are twofold:  to help accelerate a cure for childhood cancer and to support families affected by this devastating disease.

We’re Raising Awareness and Funding for Childhood Cancer Research

Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children and adolescents in the United States.  Yet financial support for childhood cancer research remains vastly underfunded.  We’re on a mission to change that. We’re partnering with the Northwestern Mutual Foundation and our non-profit partner Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation to raise critical dollars for research.

We’re Fighting Childhood Cancer ‘One Cup at A Time’

We’re helping raise funds by hosting lemonade stands in our communities. We took to the tees and hosted a golf fundraiser and participated in the Lemon: Chicago culinary event.

We’re sponsoring casual days in our office.  We’re hosting Office Olympics with the most popular event a dunk tank that allows us to sink our leaders.  And, our team members are participating in races as charity runners.

In all, we raised more than $225,000 in which will help fund 4,500 hours of research.  But we’re not stopping there.  The work continues with more lemonade stands and other creative ways our team is engaging in this effort.

We’re Supporting Kids and their Families

We also want to have an immediate impact on families in Chicago facing childhood cancer and other life-altering illnesses.

In 2015, we began a partnership with the Ronald McDonald House of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana. We regularly engage our associates with days of service providing meals for families staying at one of the five local houses.

In February, we put together more than 75 care packages for kids at the Ronald McDonald House near Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago. The gift bags were filled with books, games, arts and crafts, fuzzy socks, lip balms, movie tickets and more donated by our financial professionals.

The volunteers also made personalized cards with uplifting messages for Cards for Hospitalized Kids

In 2016, the Northwestern Mutual Foundation recognized our philanthropic efforts with the Childhood Cancer Impact Award.  As part of this recognition, Northwestern Mutual - Chicago presented a $25,000 grant to support local programming at the Ronald McDonald House.

Our vision is simple: the world without childhood cancer.  And, we won’t stop until we achieve it!

We're Leading by Example

In addition to Northwestern Mutual – Chicago’s commitment to fighting childhood cancer, our team members donate their time and talent – as well as their financial support to charities and causes that matter to them and our community.  They are rebuilding neighborhoods, helping students succeed, broadening perspective and opportunities for the disadvantaged, improving the quality of life for people with life-altering illnesses.

We’re Recognized for Our Dedication

Our efforts are being recognized.  Northwestern Mutual – Chicago has received 30 Community Service Awards from the Northwestern Mutual Foundation – more than any other of the Northwestern Mutual 300 plus network offices nationwide.

In 2017, Fred O'Connor, a Financial Advisor in our Northbrook office, was recognized as the Most Exceptional Volunteer and awarded a $25,000 grant for Big Shoulders Fund. Watch Fred's story and what drives his involvement with Big Shoulders Fund in this You Tube video.

Richard Woo, a Wealth Management Advisor in our Chicago office, was also recognized with the Community Service Award in 2017.  This is the second time Rich has won the award for his work with GRIP Youth Outreach.

We applaud them, and our past award recipients: Steve Braun, Tom Canale, Toby Eng, Kurtis Kidder, Corey McQuade, Hobie Murnane, Robert Muzikowski, and Sean Pickett.

Since the Community Service Award program started in 1995, the Northwestern Mutual Foundation has funded more than $400,000 in grants to 16 different organizations in Chicago, including:
